The Turkish Proficiency Exam (TYS) is a language proficiency test developed by the Yunus Emre Institute to assess the reading, listening, writing, and speaking skills of individuals who learn Turkish as a foreign or second language. The exam is designed in accordance with the proficiency descriptors defined by the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) and has been conducted internationally three times a year since 2013, both in Türkiye and in countries where Yunus Emre Institutes are located.
TYS, developed by the Yunus Emre Institute, has received the Q-Mark quality certification from ALTE (The Association of Language Testers in Europe), making it the first internationally recognized Turkish language proficiency exam. It is of great importance that individuals' proficiency in Turkish reading, listening, writing, and speaking is measured and evaluated through valid and reliable assessment tools. With TYS, which has international validity, the aim is also to standardize Turkish language education in various institutions abroad.
The TYS plays a crucial role in increasing foreign students' interest in Türkiye and facilitates the acceptance of their job and education applications, providing a more robust framework for their evaluation.
TYS consists of three sessions. The first two sessions (reading, listening, and writing) are administered as group tests, while the third session (speaking) is conducted individually. The first session lasts 105 minutes, the second 60 minutes, and the third 15 minutes, making the total exam duration 180 minutes.
Candidates who pass the exam receive a Turkish Proficiency Certificate at B2 or C1 levels, based on their scores. The certificate, which bears the ALTE Q-Mark, is the first Turkish language certificate with international validity.
Holders of the Turkish Proficiency Certificate are exempt from attending Turkish preparatory courses when they are accepted into any educational institution in Türkiye. Moreover, foreigners who wish to work as Turkish language teachers, guides, or interpreters are required to possess this certificate. It also provides a significant advantage in job applications.
